Rainwater harvesting in Noida and Greater Noida

Noida and Greater Noida are almost entirely group housing, offices and industrial plots, which are exactly the buildings Uttar Pradesh's rainwater harvesting rule covers. Gautam Buddh Nagar district already pumps out more groundwater than can safely be taken out each year. TerraSetu, an engineering and construction firm based in Gurugram, designs and builds rooftop rainwater harvesting and recharge systems across Noida, and repairs old ones that have stopped working.

Why Noida needs it

  • The Central Ground Water Board puts Gautam Buddh Nagar district's groundwater use at 105% of what can safely be taken out each year (2025), which it rates over-exploited. See the groundwater page.
  • Noida gets about 803 mm of rain in an average year, 82% of it from June to September. A 100 m² roof can put about 68,255 litres a year back into the ground.

The rules in Noida

  • Uttar Pradesh requires rainwater harvesting in government buildings and in new buildings above 300 sq m, including group housing and housing schemes. In October 2025 the Chief Minister directed that it be made mandatory for all buildings above 100 sq m, in both urban and rural areas. The implementing bye-law amendment was not confirmed.
  • Under the UP Ground Water (Management and Regulation) Act, 2019, commercial, industrial and infrastructure users (RO plants, hotels, hospitals, malls) need an NOC/registration via upgwdonline.in. Penalties are Rs 2-5 lakh and/or 6 months-1 year in jail (Section 39). Domestic borewell rules were not confirmed.

What Noida's buildings need

In the high-rise societies along the Noida Expressway and in Greater Noida West, the system has to handle very large roofs and podiums. That means several recharge points along the boundary road, desilting chambers on the storm drains and a yearly cleaning plan the facility team can follow.

Industrial plots in Noida's phases and in Greater Noida's sectors usually need the recharge system for their groundwater registration as well as for the building plan.

How the water travels, from roof to aquifer

Rain on your roof runs to the downpipe. The first-flush diverter throws away the dirtiest first rain, the filter chamber cleans the rest, and the clean water goes into the recharge pit and down the bore to the water-bearing layer. Any extra overflows to the drain.

The standard design we build

Every recharge point we build follows this design. Roof water passes a first-flush diverter that throws away the dirtiest first rain, then a filter chamber, and enters a brick-lined pit filled with boulders, gravel and coarse sand. At the bottom of the pit it goes into a slotted pipe wrapped in mesh, rising to a removable cap at the cover, down a sealed casing to the water-bearing layer your borewell draws from. The drawing below shows the pit and the pipe connection.

The drawing and the bill of quantities below are what you receive before work starts, sized for your roof after the survey. Check them against any other quote line by line.

A pipe runs from a removable cap at the cover down through the layers, slotted and wrapped in mesh where it passes the sand, gravel and boulders, is sealed with clay or cement grout below the pit, continues as plain 150 mm casing, and ends in a slotted section in the water-bearing layer.
