Pond rejuvenation in Gurgaon (Gurugram)
TerraSetu is a Gurugram engineering and construction firm, and village ponds in our own district are the work we know best. We survey the pond, prepare the DPR and BOQ, desilt and deepen it, build silt traps, embankments and ghats, keep sewage out and hand it back to the gram panchayat, the municipal corporation or the society that owns it. Gurugram pumps out 195% of the groundwater that can safely be taken out each year, so every pond that holds water again matters here more than almost anywhere in India.
Gurugram's ponds in numbers
- The 1st Census of Water Bodies counted 535 water bodies in Gurugram district, 521 of them ponds. 272 were not in use and 15 were encroached. See them on a map on the ponds page for Gurugram.
- The Haryana Water Resources Atlas 2025 maps 953 ponds covering 1,451 acres from satellite data.
- The Central Ground Water Board puts Gurugram's groundwater use at 195% of what can safely be taken out each year (2025), which it rates over-exploited. The groundwater page for Gurugram and the water table page show how far the water has fallen.
- Our post on Gurugram's disappearing ponds shows what the records reveal about ponds lost to building, silt and sewage.
How we rejuvenate a pond in Gurugram
Records and survey
We take the pond's boundary from revenue records and the Pond Authority's pond list, then GPS-survey the bed levels, silt depth, inlets, outlets, encroachments and every drain that enters it.
DPR and BOQ
Storage before and after, catchment and inflow, drawings, an item-wise cost and a schedule that the gram panchayat, MCG, GMDA or a CSR committee can approve. Work out the volumes yourself first with the pond volume calculator.
Keep sewage out
In Gurugram's urban villages the biggest problem is often a village drain running into the pond. We divert it into a separate channel or treat it first in a small constructed wetland before anything else is built.
Desilt and deepen
Excavators remove the silt that seals the bed. Clean silt goes to farmers' fields in the rural blocks; silt from ponds fed by drains is tested and disposed of separately.
Inlets, banks and recharge
Silt traps and screens on every inlet, earthen or stone-pitched banks, ghats and steps, and recharge shafts in the bed where the soil is tight, so water reaches Gurugram's deep water table instead of only evaporating.
Plant, fence and hand over
Plantation, fencing, a walkway and signboards, then handover with as-built drawings and a yearly upkeep plan for whoever looks after the pond.
What pond rejuvenation costs in Gurugram
Earthwork is the biggest cost. One acre dug 1 m deeper moves about 4,050 m³ of silt. Inside the city, where there are no fields nearby to take the silt, carting it further adds to the price; in the rural blocks farmers usually take it free.
| Pond size and work | Indicative cost with GST |
|---|---|
| 1 acre, desilt 1 m, inlet silt trap, earthen embankment | ₹9 lakh to ₹15 lakh |
| 1 acre, desilt 1.5 m, stone pitching on the slopes, one ghat | ₹20 lakh to ₹31 lakh |
| 3 acres, desilt 1 m, pitching, walkway, wastewater channel | ₹45 lakh to ₹70 lakh |
The same ranges as our pond rejuvenation page, for budgeting. Silt depth, carting distance, sewage diversion and the length of stone pitching move the price most; the survey fixes it.
