Pond rejuvenation in Nuh (Mewat)
In Nuh (Mewat), ponds are still how many villages get through the dry months. Much of the district's groundwater is too salty to drink or irrigate with, so the rain a village pond and its johads hold is often the only sweet water for people and cattle. TerraSetu, an engineering and construction firm based in Gurugram, surveys ponds in Nuh, prepares the DPR and BOQ, desilts and deepens them, builds inlets, banks and ghats, keeps sewage out and hands them back to whoever owns them.
Nuh's ponds in numbers
- The 1st Census of Water Bodies counted 337 water bodies in Nuh district, 337 of them ponds. 238 were not in use. See them on the ponds page for Nuh.
- The Haryana Water Resources Atlas 2025 maps 1,436 ponds covering 3,023 acres from satellite data, and counts 16,108 irrigation tubewells in the district.
- The Central Ground Water Board puts Nuh's groundwater use at 72% of what can safely be taken out each year (2025), which it rates semi-critical. See the groundwater page for Nuh.
- CGWB's pre-monsoon readings put water at 2–5 m below ground in most of its 6 monitoring wells in Nuh district, from 1.28 m in the shallowest to 5.54 m in the deepest. See the water table page.
- CGWB's 2023 testing found salt and fluoride above the BIS limit in groundwater samples from the district. See the water quality page.
- Nuh gets about 675 mm of rain in an average year (2006–2025), 82% of it from June to September. See the rainfall page.
What Nuh's ponds need
Nuh gets less rain than most of the NCR, and most of it falls in July and August. A pond here has to hold that water for months, so depth and a clean inlet matter more than anything else. Silt washing off the Aravalli slopes fills ponds quickly, and a silt trap on every inlet is what keeps the work lasting.
Because the groundwater under much of the district is saline, a pond here is mainly for storage and to keep a layer of fresh water over the salty water below, not only for recharge. The census and the state atlas count Nuh's ponds very differently, so we always start from the pond on the ground and the revenue record.
How we rejuvenate a pond in Nuh
Records and survey
We take the pond's boundary from the revenue records, then GPS-survey the bed levels, silt depth, inlets, outlets, encroachments and every drain that enters it.
Trap the silt
Silt traps and stone-lined inlets on every channel coming off the hills, so the pond does not fill with silt again within a few monsoons.
DPR and BOQ
Storage before and after, catchment and inflow, drawings, an item-wise cost and a schedule that the owner or a CSR committee can approve. Work out the volumes first with the pond volume calculator.
Desilt, deepen and build
Excavators remove the silt sealing the bed; clean silt goes to farmers' fields. Then silt traps on every inlet, earthen or stone-pitched banks, ghats and steps.
Plant, fence and hand over
Plantation, fencing and signboards, then handover with as-built drawings and a yearly upkeep plan.
What pond rejuvenation costs in Nuh
Earthwork is the biggest cost. One acre dug 1 m deeper moves about 4,050 m³ of silt; where farmers nearby take it, carting costs little, and where it must be hauled away, the price rises.
| Pond size and work | Indicative cost with GST |
|---|---|
| 1 acre, desilt 1 m, inlet silt trap, earthen embankment | ₹9 lakh to ₹15 lakh |
| 1 acre, desilt 1.5 m, stone pitching on the slopes, one ghat | ₹20 lakh to ₹31 lakh |
| 3 acres, desilt 1 m, pitching, walkway, wastewater channel | ₹45 lakh to ₹70 lakh |
The same ranges as our pond rejuvenation page, for budgeting. Silt depth, carting distance, sewage diversion and stone pitching move the price most; the survey fixes it.

Does reviving a pond help groundwater in Nuh?
Partly. Nuh's groundwater use is 72% of the safe limit and the water table is shallow in much of the district, so a revived pond does most good here as clean storage, drainage in heavy rain and a source of treated water for fields, with recharge only where the water below is fresh and deep.
Who gives permission to revive a pond in Nuh?
Almost all of Nuh's ponds are village ponds on panchayat land. The gram panchayat passes a resolution and the work is registered with the block and the Haryana Pond Authority.
When should pond work in Nuh start?
Site work takes 6 to 12 weeks for most one to three acre ponds and has to finish before the monsoon reaches Nuh, usually in late June or early July. Start the survey and approvals by January.
