Pond rejuvenation in Hisar (Hissar)
Hisar is the driest district on this list, with rain of only about half a metre in a normal year. Much of its groundwater is too salty to drink, so villages depend on canal water stored in ponds and tanks, and on the rain their ponds can hold. TerraSetu, an engineering and construction firm based in Gurugram, surveys ponds in Hisar, prepares the DPR and BOQ, desilts and deepens them, builds inlets, banks and ghats, keeps sewage out and hands them back to whoever owns them.
Hisar's ponds in numbers
- The 1st Census of Water Bodies counted 1,086 water bodies in Hisar district, 1,084 of them ponds. 295 were not in use. See them on the ponds page for Hisar.
- The Haryana Water Resources Atlas 2025 maps 2,140 ponds covering 3,619 acres from satellite data, and counts 68,215 irrigation tubewells in the district.
- The Central Ground Water Board puts Hisar's groundwater use at 73% of what can safely be taken out each year (2025), which it rates semi-critical. See the groundwater page for Hisar.
- CGWB's pre-monsoon readings put water at 5–10 m below ground in most of its 30 monitoring wells in Hisar district, from 3.68 m in the shallowest to 22.43 m in the deepest. See the water table page.
- CGWB's 2023 testing found salt and fluoride above the BIS limit in groundwater samples from the district, 19 of 58 samples over the limit for salt and 14 of 58 samples over the limit for fluoride. See the water quality page.
- Hisar gets about 529 mm of rain in an average year (2006–2025), 78% of it from June to September. See the rainfall page.
What Hisar's ponds need
Many Hisar villages fill a pond or storage tank from the canal when it runs and draw on it until the next turn. These ponds need clean, lined inlets from the canal, desilting and banks that keep village runoff out.
CGWB found salt and fluoride over the safe limit in a large share of Hisar's samples. Where the water below is saline, a pond is for storage, not recharge, and its bed should not be broken through into salty layers.
How we rejuvenate a pond in Hisar
Records and survey
We take the pond's boundary from the revenue records, then GPS-survey the bed levels, silt depth, inlets, outlets, encroachments and every drain that enters it.
Clean the canal inlet
The canal feed is cleaned or rebuilt with a silt chamber and screen, and village runoff and drains are kept out of ponds used for drinking water storage.
DPR and BOQ
Storage before and after, catchment and inflow, drawings, an item-wise cost and a schedule that the owner or a CSR committee can approve. Work out the volumes first with the pond volume calculator.
Desilt, deepen and build
Excavators remove the silt sealing the bed; clean silt goes to farmers' fields. Then silt traps on every inlet, earthen or stone-pitched banks, ghats and steps.
Plant, fence and hand over
Plantation, fencing and signboards, then handover with as-built drawings and a yearly upkeep plan.
What pond rejuvenation costs in Hisar
Earthwork is the biggest cost. One acre dug 1 m deeper moves about 4,050 m³ of silt; where farmers nearby take it, carting costs little, and where it must be hauled away, the price rises.
| Pond size and work | Indicative cost with GST |
|---|---|
| 1 acre, desilt 1 m, inlet silt trap, earthen embankment | ₹9 lakh to ₹15 lakh |
| 1 acre, desilt 1.5 m, stone pitching on the slopes, one ghat | ₹20 lakh to ₹31 lakh |
| 3 acres, desilt 1 m, pitching, walkway, wastewater channel | ₹45 lakh to ₹70 lakh |
The same ranges as our pond rejuvenation page, for budgeting. Silt depth, carting distance, sewage diversion and stone pitching move the price most; the survey fixes it.

Frequently asked questions
Who does pond rejuvenation in Hisar?
TerraSetu, a Gurugram engineering and construction firm, does pond rejuvenation in Hisar, from the survey and DPR to desilting, sewage diversion, stone work and handover, for gram panchayats, CSR teams, civic bodies and campuses.
How much does pond rejuvenation cost in Hisar?
Most one acre ponds cost ₹9 lakh to ₹31 lakh with GST, depending on silt depth, carting distance and how much stone pitching is needed. A three acre pond with a walkway and a wastewater channel is ₹45 lakh to ₹70 lakh.
How many ponds are there in Hisar?
The 1st Census of Water Bodies counted 1,084 ponds among 1,086 water bodies in Hisar district, and 295 water bodies were not in use. The Haryana Water Resources Atlas 2025 maps 2,140 ponds from satellite data.
Does reviving a pond help groundwater in Hisar?
Partly. Hisar's groundwater use is 73% of the safe limit and the water table is not yet deep in much of the district, so a revived pond does most good here as clean storage, drainage in heavy rain and a source of treated water for fields, with recharge only where the water below is fresh and deep.
Who gives permission to revive a pond in Hisar?
Village ponds are panchayat land, so the gram panchayat passes a resolution and the work is registered with the block and the Haryana Pond Authority. Canal-fed water works ponds are run by the Public Health Engineering Department, and ponds inside the city by the Municipal Corporation of Hisar.
When should pond work in Hisar start?
Site work takes 6 to 12 weeks for most one to three acre ponds and has to finish before the monsoon reaches Hisar, usually in early July. Start the survey and approvals by January.
