Borewell recharge

Borewells rarely fail overnight. The water table falls a little each year until the pump draws air. Sending your roof and yard rainwater back down a recharge bore puts water into the same layers your borewell draws from, and is the cheapest way to keep a bore working.

How we recharge a borewell

  1. Check your area

We read your district's water table depth and groundwater stage to set the recharge bore depth: about 60 ft where water is shallow, 120 ft in most of NCR, 200 ft or more where it is deep.

  2. Collect the water

Roof downpipes and yard drains are joined and led through a filter chamber of gravel, charcoal and sand, with a first-flush diverter for the dirty first rain.

  3. Build the recharge pit

A pit about 2 × 2 × 2.5 m, lined with honeycomb brickwork and filled with boulders, gravel and coarse sand, with an RCC cover.

  4. Drill the recharge bore

A 150 mm bore in the pit floor with slotted PVC casing, reaching the water-bearing layer, so filtered water goes straight down.

What it costs

Recharge bore depthOne recharge point with GST
60 ft (shallow water table)₹87,000 to ₹1.4 lakh
120 ft (most of Delhi NCR)₹1.1 lakh to ₹1.7 lakh
200 ft (deep water table)₹1.4 lakh to ₹2.2 lakh

One pit with media and bore, plus a filter chamber and piping, at the same unit rates as our rainwater harvesting cost pages. A house usually needs one point; a factory or society roof needs several, which the recharge pit calculator works out.

Can I put rainwater straight into my own borewell?

Not without filtering it, and only with clean roof water. Unfiltered water carries silt that chokes the bore, and yard or road runoff can carry oil and sewage into your own drinking water. A separate recharge bore a few metres away is safer and recharges the same aquifer. A dry, unused borewell can be converted into a recharge bore with a filter on top.

Frequently asked questions

How long before my borewell improves?

A recharge point near the borewell helps from the first monsoon, but the water table across an area recovers over years and only if neighbours recharge too. Recharge slows the fall first, then reverses it.

Do I need permission to recharge?

No permission is needed to recharge rainwater. Many cities require it: see the rules in your state. Drawing groundwater for business use needs a CGWA NOC in most places, and recharge is one of its conditions.

How often does the recharge pit need cleaning?

Clean the filter chamber and the top layer of sand before every monsoon. Replace the sand every two to three years.
